Police Spokesperson SSP Ajith Rohana said that no major election violence incidents were reported at today’s Presidential election, what he explained as probably ‘the most peaceful election’ that the country witnessed after decades.
The observation was made at a press conference held at the Government Information Department, this afternoon.
Over 70,000 policemen have been deployed for the Presidential Election, SSP Rohana said, adding that the army would be deployed if required and security will be tightened in some areas where violent incidents were reported.
Meanwhile, responding to a query by a reporter, Army Spokesperson Brigadier Ruwan Wanigasooriya expressed that military personals never intervened for the poll duties.
In a previous occasion, some monitoring group expressed concerns that the military presence in the former war zone may lower voter turnout in the presidential election.
“Some groups were trying to create problems that don’t exist due to their personal agendas. However, today we have concluded a peaceful election,” Wanigasooriya said.
