Ex-Minister Wimal Weerawansa has been summoned to the Police Headquarters on Monday (23) morning and is being questioned by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) officers, a senior police officer told Ada Derana.

The source added the CID summoned Weerawansa in order to record a statement in connection with a complaint lodged by Kaduwela Mayor H.A. Buddhadasa in 2011.

It was widely known Mayor Buddhadasa and ex-Minister Weerawansa were at loggerheads over several issues for years.

Earlier, Buddhadasa also lodged a complaint with the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka (HRCSL), in 2011, accusing the ex-Minister of violating election laws and regulation during the last Municipal Council election.

Buddhadasa also filed a lawsuit against Weerawansa demanding Rs.500 million as compensation. The case was filed at the Colombo District courts, on 4 September 2014.

The case was filed following an alleged false and defamatory article carried out by ‘Panchayudha’ newspaper which was published by the National Freedom Front (NFF) during its 2nd National summit in April 2014.

The CID also apprehended Weerawansa’s wife, Shashi Weerawansa, on Sunday (22) evening, who was under investigation for allegedly providing a forge document to obtain a diplomatic passport.
