The 19th Amendment to the Constitution would never have approved if the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) ignored to extend its support for the new legislation, opposition leader Nimal Siripala de Silva said.

The observation was made during a press conference held in Colombo on Wednesday (29) afternoon. The opposition leader said that the SLFP will urge the government to bring forward the 20th Amendment as well.

“The island nation timely wants to have the new electoral system. The SLFP was of the view that the 19th Amendment and the 20th Amendment should come hand in hand. But it was stuck in a deadlock as the Prime Minister turned a blind eye in this regard,” he added.

Meanwhile, the Jathika Hela Urumaya also asserted that the party will insist the government to endorse the 20th Amendment.

“The 19th Amendment is still incomplete though it got the approval. It will be completed once the 20th Amendment is also passed,” JHU General Secretary and Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka said at a press conference today (29).
