Police today used tear gas to disperse protesters who were behaving violently near Jaffna Court over a rape and murder of a girl in Kayts, the police said.

The tense situation arose as the suspects in the case were brought to the court, a short while ago.

Police said that several protesters were arrested following the clash, which resulted in at least 4 police officers sustaining injuries.

Police have arrested nine suspects in connection with the kidnapping, rape and murder of the 18-year-old student, who was on her way to school in Punkudithivu, Jaffna.

The discovery of the body was made following investigations carried out based on a complaint filed by the girl’s parents with Kytes Police Station after their daughter had not returned home from school on May 13.

Preliminary inquiries had revealed that the girl had been absent at school on that day and that she was abducted on the way to school.

Based on a suspicion, police had searched the residence of a youth in the area and had found several bloodstained clothing on May 15.
