Opposition Leader slams UNP’s “dual policy”

Sri Lanka’s Opposition today said that they will seek to debate the motion of no-confidence against Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe in Parliament, in the third week of July.

The motion against Wickremesinghe, brought forth by a group of opposition MPs and containing 112 signatures, was handed over to the Secretary General of Parliament Dhammika Dasanayake on June 05.

A similar no-faith motion was filed against Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayake and is expected to be taken for debate on July 06.

Leader of the Opposition Nimal Siripala de Silva, speaking at a press briefing in Colombo today, stated that the United National Party (UNP) had supported the increasing of MPs (from 225 to 237) at the cabinet meeting but later declared they were against the move, while terming it as a “dual policy.”

The UPFA Parliamentarians stated that they too had no necessity to increase the number members in parliament and accused the UNP of “sabotaging” constitutional amendments such as the 20A.

The Opposition Leader said that what the UNP wants now is an election and that his party is also prepared to go for polls. However, priority should be given to the 20th amendment, he told reporters at SLFP headquarters.
