Hailing today’s General Election as the most peaceful in the country’s history, President Maithripala Sirisena urged the public to enjoy the results in a calm manner.
Delivering a special statement on Monday (17), the President stated that to his knowledge the election which concluded today was the most peaceful in the country’s entire history of holding parliamentary polls since 1947.
Sirisena said he believes that the election was conducted in a peaceful environment as a result of the good governance established through the changes and transformations carried out within the 6 months since his election as President.
The President stated that this was a stark contrast to the pre-election atmosphere and the election day of the Presidential Election he contested on January 08.
Sirisena expressed delight over being able to conduct such a peaceful election during his tenure as President, for the first time in history.
The main lesson we should learn from this is that such a peaceful election is the result of the head of state acting in a neutral manner during election campaigning, he said.
He kindly urged the people of the country to enjoy the results of the election in a calm manner without post-election violence and party differences.
