SLFP celebrates 64th anniversary today

The Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) will hold its 64th Anniversary commemoration in Polonnaruwa today under the patronage of party leader President Maithripala Sirisena.

 

The Rajarata Navodya Grounds in Polonnaruwa is the venue of the commemoration planned for the 64th Anniversary of the SLFP.

 

One of the major political parties in Sri Lanka, the SLFP was founded by S.W.R.D. Bandaranaike on September 02nd 1951 after he resigned as a Minister of the United National Party and sat in the Opposition. 

 

The Party faced the first General election in the year 1952 and secured nine seats becoming a revolutionary party. Mr Bandaranaike assumed the Opposition Leader’s post.

 

The Sri Lanka Freedom Party with the support of the Mahajana Eksath Peramuna contested the Parliamentary elections held in 1956. The Mahajana Eksath Peramuna secured 51 seats.
 
Maithripala Sirisena holding the designation of the General Secretary of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party succeeded in the Presidential election held in 2015, contesting as the common Opposition candidate.
