Government holds a double standard: Gammanpila

The government holds a double standard in dealing with the international community and the public with respect to the probe on alleged war crimes investigation, leader of the Pivithuru Hela Urumaya Udaya Gammanpila says.

The observation was made at a press conference held in Colombo on Tuesday (15).

“The Foreign Minister delivered contradictory information. He said one thing to the international community and another to us,” Gammanpila asserted.

He also went into say the Foreign Minister should clarify his statement about the ‘adoption of a new Constitution’ which he stated during the speech at the 30th session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva yesterday (14).

“Minister Mangala Samaraweera should explain as to how the new Government expects to address the issues faced by the Tamil community with a new Constitution,” he added.

“In order to guarantee non-recurrence, it is proposed that a series of measures would be undertaken including administrative and judicial reform, and the adoption of a new Constitution. A series of measures including amending the penal code to criminalise hate speech and enforced disappearances are also in process.” Samaraweera said at the 30th session.
