Special device to help safeguard children – Harin

A special mobile device will be introduced in the near future to help parents easily locate their children as a measure to ensure the latter’s safety, Minister of Telecommunications and Digital Infrastructure Harin Fernando said.

Addressing a media briefing in Colombo today, the minister said that he was saddened to hear about the tragic fate suffered by several children including Seya Sadewmi recently.

He stated that as a result of such unfortunate incidents parents have become increasingly concerned regarding the safety of their children.

It is the responsibility of the government to safeguard the children, Fernanado said, adding that for this purpose a special device similar to a mobile phone will be introduced soon and that it will help parents to easily identify the location of their children.

He stated that it will also allow children to immediately contact the police or responsible authorities when necessary.

When inquired as to whether the technology will be made affordable to the average citizen, Fernando said that Sri Lanka has the lowest call charges in the world and that parents who give precedence to the safety of their children will not hesitate to spend a small sum on this.
