A prison guard has been arrested for impersonating an officer of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) and obtaining money as tribute from an unsuspecting victim.
The arrested suspect had allegedly phoned an individual in Kadawatha and notified him that an investigation has been launched into his purchase of a three-wheeler while claiming that the documents of the vehicle were forged.
He had demanded that Rs 25,000 be deposited in a certain bank account in order to refrain from proceeding with an investigation.
The individual had proceeded to notify the police after the suspect had demanded more money afterwards.
After preliminary inquiries, police uncovered that the man posing as the CID office was in fact a prison guard living in Moronthota.
He was arrested yesterday and produced at the Mahara Magistrate’s Court today.
