Prime Minister Ranil Wickramasinghe has appointed a committee headed by Dr. B. M. S. Batagoda to investigate into the attack on the Higher National Diplomas in Accountancy (HNDA) students in Town Hall.

Minister of Law and Order Tilak Marapana will also make a special statement at the Parliament tomorrow on this regard, it was reported.

A three member committee will be appointed by the National Police Commission to investigate into attack on the students as well, a source said this morning (02).

Earlier, Police arrested 39 students including two monks who had engaged in the protest, demanding that the Higher National Diploma in Accountancy be made equivalent to a degree programme and against curtailing the four year programme by one year.

The protesters, who were blocking the road at Ward Place near the University Grants Commission (UGC), were baton charged, met with tear gas and water cannons as they refused to disperse.
