Minister of Ports and Shipping Arjuna Ranatunga has sent a Letter of Demand, through his lawyers, to the President of Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) Thilanga Sumathipala seeking Rs 1,000 million as compensation for allegedly insulting the former.

Issuing a statement, the Minister says that Sumathipala had made defamatory comments regarding him at a press conference on January 04 after being elected to the Presidency of SLC.

Ranatunga also claims that he has had to face baseless allegations and disgrace as a result of the comments made by Thilanga Sumathipala.

The letter of demand states that the Minister will proceed with legal action against the SLC President if the latter fails to pay the sum of Rs 1,000 million within 14 days of receiving the letter.

Ranatunga, Sri Lanka’s World Cup winning cricket captain, contested for the position of SLC Vice President, however failed to receive sufficient votes at the election.

After winning the SLC election, Sumathipala had accused the Minister of promising jobs in the harbour in exchange for votes.
