A Sri Lankan maid who brokered a botched bid to smuggle heroin into Kuwait has lost an appeal against a 10-year jail term, Dhs50,000 fine and deportation.

The maid FS, 32, was arrested in Dubai with two compatriot drivers on Jun.11, 2015 after police learnt that she had handed them a consignment of 3.2kg for smuggling.

At the Dubai Criminal Court, she and both drivers MK, 40, and AD, 34, were charged with illicit possession of heroin. She denied. The drivers argued that it did not belong to them.

The court sentenced the trio to 10 years in jail, a Dhs50,000 fine each, plus deportation. They all sought to challenge the ruling but the Appeals Court upheld it.

Under the directives of a mastermind residing abroad, FS received heroin from a man in Sharjah’s Rolla area, contacted dealers in Kuwait, repackaged it and handed it to drivers.

Police arrested both drivers at the Jebel Ali Port’s entrance. Both directed policemen to a plastic roll they had stashed under AD’s truck. They revealed they were about to export it to Kuwait.

Then, police raided FS’s apartment in Sharjah and seized stained newspapers, tissues, plastic bags and a digital scale, Jebel Ali Police records showed.
