Tax hike on imported potatoes & big onions

The special commodity levy on imported potatoes has been increased to Rs 35 per kg while the levy on big onions has been increased to Rs 25 per kg with effect from midnight yesterday (Feb. 29), the Finance Ministry said.

President Maithripala Sirisena yesterday instructed officials to increase the import tax for potatoes and big onions to encourage local farmers, during a special meeting held at the Presidential Secretariat to discuss about the issues faced by the farmers island-wide.
