One dead, 2 injured after train hits lorry

An elderly man was killed while two others were wounded after a lorry collided with a train at the Weliwatta railway crossing in Habaraduwa.

Police said that a Colombo-bound train arriving from Matara hit the lorry which was attempting to pass through the crossing.

The driver of the lorry, a passenger and the gatekeeper at the crossing were admitted to the Karapitiya Hospital following the incident, however the driver succumbed to injuries. 

The deceased is a 77-year-old resident of Ginigala in Habaraduwa. 

Habaraduwa Police is conducting an investigation.
