At least 30 safari jeeps have temporary been banned from entering into the Yala National Park for violating speed limits within the area and several other rules, a source said.
Department of Wildlife Conservation (DWC) Director General Dr. Sumith Pilapitiya says strict measures have been taken in a bid to create an environment that is safe and secure for the wildlife.
This came after authorities have received reports of several animals being killed by careless drivers transporting visitors on safari.
Earlier, the authorities also banned the use of cell phones within the park to stop leopards and other wildlife being killed by speeding vehicles which have been tipped off about their whereabouts.
The park attracts more than 100,000 foreign tourists each year and is a key source of revenue to the government.
