The water level in the low-level areas on both sides of the Kelani River and other areas in the Colombo District has decreased compared to yesterday (19).

As at 7.00am today the water level at Nagalagan Street was recorded as 7.2 feet compared to yesterday’s 7.65 feet.

When inquired regarding this, the Colombo District Irrigation Director K.G. Pathmakeerthi stated that the water level in Hanwella and upper areas has also gradually decreased.

However, the flood situation continues to persist, he said.

Meanwhile one spill gate of the Upper Kotmale Dam has been reopened due to the heavy rainfall experienced last night.

However, if rain continues to fall in the western slope region of the central hills, the spill gates of the Kotmale Reservoir are expected to automatically open.

Therefore the people who use the Kotmale Oya should remain vigilant, power plant engineers warn.
