State Minister of Defence Ruwan Wijewardene has visited Kosgama on an inspection visit to see the damage caused by the fire at the Salawa Army Camp today (06), the Defence Ministry said.

By now the fire has been brought under control. Explosions were triggered when the fire which erupted last evening had spread to the ammunition dump of the camp.

Minister Wijewardene also undertook an aerial visit to take stock of the damages caused by the fire. Secretary to the Ministry of Defence Karunasena Hettiarachchi also joined the State Minister during this visit.

Health authorities have advised the people to be mindful when using water from open sources for drinking purposes and to use pipe borne water. Authorities have begun the supply of water to the displaced people with the use of bowsers.

People in the surrounding areas of the camp are strongly advised not to pick up or touch any debris or unexploded explosive ordinance and make sure to keep away from such materials.

Use of protective breathing gear can help to safeguard from breathing impairments. Authorities are working round the clock to bring the situation under control and assist the people to return to their homes.

The Army has taken the responsibility to repair homes and buildings damaged in the incident. Security forces have deployed special security patrols in the area to protect people and property.
