Hambantota District MP and former President’s son Namal Rajapaksa, who was arrested by the FCID, has been remanded until 18 July by the Fort Magistrate, Ada Derana reporter said.
Namal Rajapaksa was arrested as he arrived at the FCID to give a statement on a financial irregularity this morning. The MP was summoned to obtain a statement regarding a financial transaction with Indian real estate company ‘Krrish Group’, an official said.
Namal Rajapaksa had been questioned by financial police investigating the $650m high-end project in the capital, Colombo.
It is the third detention of a member of the once-powerful family. Namal has denied any wrongdoing and accused the government of carrying out a witchhunt against its political rivals instead of delivering on its promise of good governance.
‘This is the good governance,’ Namal told reporters as he was taken to court.
The FCID and the special Presidential Commission of Inquiry had recorded statements from the MP in previous occasions as well.
However, earlier today, Namal Rajapaksa in a Facebook status update said, “Yahapalanaya” ministers appear to be deciding who to arrest. This is “good governance” at its best, taking the law in to its own hands. We will never stop our struggle for a people’s government.
