Sri Lankan navy personnel have arrested five local fishermen who engaged in illegal fishing activities in seas off Kondampiddi Point and Sukkote.
Naval personnel attached to SLNS Gajaba located in Thalpadu, Mannar in North Central Naval Area, arrested 3 local fishermen using unauthorized fishing nets in the seas off Kondampiddi Point yesterday (15), navy media unit said.
Along with the suspects a traditional boat (Wallam) and 3 monofilament nets were also taken into custody. The apprehended persons and items were produced to Mannar Assistant Director of Fisheries for onward action.
On the same day 2 more local fishermen were arrested by naval personnel attached to SLNS Uththara located in Kankesanthurai in Northern Naval Area, for engaging in illegal fishing activities using unauthorized fishing nets in the sea area of Sukkote.
During the raid 3 monofilament nets were taken into naval custody. The apprehended persons and belongings were handed over to Jaffna Assistant Director of Fisheries for onward action.
