
At least 17 persons including 12 foreigners were injured and hospitalized after a swarm of wasps attacked a group visiting the Sigiriya rock this morning (17), Ada Derana reporter said.
The wounded have been admitted to Sigiriya and Dambulla Hospitals and are currently receiving treatment.
Tourists and locals visiting Sigiriya have been attacked by wasps on several previous occasions as well while entrance to the rock.
Wasp-attacks are relatively frequent in different parts of Sri Lanka, where 57 people were hospitalized in early this month after being attacked by wasps.
Last year, one woman died and 17 others were injured when a group of tea-pickers in the mountains in central Sri Lanka were attacked by wasps.
