Norway grants Rs 142 million to help newly resettled

The Norwegian Government has granted financial assistance amounting to Rs. 142 million for the recently resettled people in the Jaffna and Trincomalee districts through United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

 

Ambassador of Norway to Sri Lanka and Maldives, Thorbjørn Gaustadsæther and Resident Representative of the United Nations in Sri Lanka, Lovita Ramguttee signed an Agreement for this purpose. 

 

The support amounting to Rs. 142 million aims of estimated 1000 families as direct beneficiaries in the two districts, the embassy said in a statement.

 

“The support aims to create sustainable livelihood opportunities for targeted communities in agriculture, fisheries, livestock and alternative income-generation activities to revitalize economic opportunities at the community level by providing access to productive inputs, skills trainings, tools, equipment, seeds and vital infrastructure, and increasing local employment.”

 

In Nov 2015, Norway supported through UNDP Rs. 67 million to the recently relocated community within the Valalai and Thellipalai areas in Jaffna District to begin their livelihoods.
