Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation Nimal Siripala de Silva says that a bill will be introduced to Parliament in the future to enforce laws with regard to fixing seat belts for the safety of three-wheeler passengers.

Addressing an event held in Colombo today to unveil a new three-wheeler improved with safety features, he stated that this will be done with the safety of the public in mind.

He also said that the import of three-wheelers, also popularly known as “Tuk Tuks,” to the country would have to be limited as there are more than enough currently in Sri Lanka.

The minister said that there are plenty of technical deficiencies in the three-wheelers which are currently plying the roads in the country and that it is the duty of the government to correct them.

He stated that laws will be created for this purpose in the future.

Nimal Siripala said that there are around 1.5 million three-wheelers now in Sri Lanka and that although they provide the public with speedy transportation at a low cost, they lack sufficient safety measures.
