The brother and sister of the youth who escaped while in police custody in Hambantota have been arrested on the allegation of harbouring their younger brother, police said.
The preliminary police investigation have found that the suspects were aware of the whereabouts of the youth who escaped from police custody two weeks ago.
The youth in question, G.G. Gayashan, 22, had initially been arrested by police on September 5, along with two others, over their alleged connection with the theft of 80 sacks of paddy from a storage facility in Bandagiriya.
Four police officers - three Sergeants and one Constable- attached to the Hambantota Police Station were suspended over the incident. Several police officers attached to the Hambantota police station were also transferred over the same incident.
