Tense situation as fishermen clash in Kalpitiya

A tense situation was reported in the Kandakulama area in Kalpitiya following a clash between two groups of fishermen in the area.
A group of small-scale fishermen have been engaged in a protest since yesterday (20) against the use of illegal fishing methods and equipment.
They had been blocking the Puttalam-Kalpitiya road during the protest yesterday.
Meanwhile another group of fishermen, accused of using banned nets and equipment, had arrived at the location of the protest this morning while this had resulted in a clash between the two groups.
It has also been reported that Police Special Task Force (STF) personnel have been deployed in the area afterwards in order to bring the situation under control.
