Police have launched investigations to apprehend the six Indian nationals, arrested in connection with the kidney transplant racket, who have escaped from the Mirihana detention center last evening.

The special detention center in Mirihana, which is controlled by the Department of Immigration and Emigration, is used for detaining foreigners arrested in the country.

This is the second time suspects arrested in connection with the kidney transplant racket had escaped the center as an Indian had previously fled and absconded.

Police are investigating reports of an organised organ harvesting racket involving patients and donors from neighbouring India.

Eight Indians have been arrested over the racket while 6 were found to have had their kidneys removed. They had been arrested on March 3 at Pennyquick Road in the south Colombo ward of Wellawatta for alleged visa overstays.

In January, it was reported that the Indian police had charged six Sri Lankan doctors for carrying out 60 kidney transplants.
