A letter signed by 20 Muslim politicians has been handed over to the President following continued hate campaign against the Muslims in Sri Lanka.

The letter has urged the immediate attention of the President over the issue.

The letter says, Extremist Buddhists, mostly led by Buddhist monks continue to threaten the peace that exists in the country. Since your election to the Presidency in January 2015, there has been a lull in the hate campaign, but during the last 2 1/2 months it has rernerged with much vigour. We see this hate campaign spearheaded by groups like the Bodu Bala Sena, Ravana Balaya, Sinha Le, Mahason Balakaya, and Sasanarakshaka Balakaya within the last three months.

Your Excellency, the Prime Minister Ranil Wickramasinghe, Justice and Buddha Sasana Minister Wijedasa Rajapaksa and Police Spokesperson DIG Ajith Rohana made cear public statements that there would be zero tolerance of hate speech. These seem to be mere words, as the Police has taken no action against extremist Buddhist violators. The very new day after these declarations, a demonstration of over 5000 led by Buddhist monks in Kandy paraded the streets and shouted slogans of hate against the Muslims. The Muslims did not get provoked, and peace prevailed. Our mosques and religious leadership had requested all Muslims to remain calm and have total restraint against any form of provocation.
