I am not a backstabber, says MR

Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa said he is not a backstabber, thus he would not intend to topple the government in the absence of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe.

The observation was made while he was speaking to reporters in Colombo on Wednesday.

He was responding to PM’s remark that “I will be going next week to Switzerland for one week giving Mahinda time to bring the government down.”

“I won’t need time until Wickremesinghe leaves the country to effect a regime change. I would be able to do so while he is in Sri Lanka,” he said.

Mahinda Rajapaksa earlier had told journalists that he intended to “topple” the current government in 2017. Rajapaksa said that 2017 will be the year in which the future of Sri Lanka will be decided.
