The Municipal Commissioner of the Colombo Municipal Council stated that the garbage mounds found around the city is part of an organized measure to clutter the city.
He added that there has been no evidence to show that the clutter had been dumped by households, and that it had to be part of a deliberate measure taken to pollute the city.
V.A.K. Anura made these statements during a media briefing held in Colombo yesterday (19).
Anura further made a request to the public to help with the sorting out of household waste into different categories, as the lack of enthusiasm shown for this initiative has been very worrying.
Any individuals who fail to separate their household waste will have legal action taken against them.
Anura added that the false image of the army being used to collect garbage, by the media is untrue, and that no such measure has been taken; however if the assistance is required, then they will be used accordingly.
