Former parliamentarian G. L. Peiris says that the Government is attempting to introduce the Provincial Councils Elections (Amendment) Act with its own ulterior motive.
The former parliamentarian stated this upon attending a media briefing of the Joint Opposition’s Economic Research Unit today (18).
The Provincial Councils Elections (Amendment) Bill was gazetted by the Government On July 07.
G. L. Peiris explained that under the new Amendment, 30 percent female representation should be included in the nomination paper, without which, the nomination paper would be subjected to rejection.
He proceeded to state that postponement of elections had now become an established policy of the Government, and added that introducing new amendments and then postponing elections till the amendments were passed could not be condoned at all.
Furthermore, he also stated that it was against the law to collect property taxes when the Local Government was inactive.
