Minister of Power and Renewable Energy Ranjith Siyambalapitiya stated that there will be no power shortages or unplanned power cuts during the dry season.

He added that the government has caught themselves in a challenging situation due to word being passed around regarding the frequent power cuts around the country.

Siyambalapitiya further stated that the daily demand for electricity has increased by 10% compared to last year’s average, and that this was due to the dry climatic conditions the country is experiencing.

The minister stated that the generation of electricity at hydro power plants, have decreased by 36% while the generation capacity of some reservoirs have decreased by 20%.

Furthermore one generator at the Norochcholai power plant has been temporarily shut down for maintenance purposes.

Minister concluded by stating that they will be working towards ensuring that electricity is provided consistently without the cost of electricity increasing for the consumer.
