2717 persons have been arrested over various offences following a special island-wide police operation.
Police reported that the operation had been put in place from midnight yesterday (01) till today (02) morning.
The Police Media Spokesperson’s Office reported that the Police Headquarters had launched the operation under the supervision of the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Pujith Jayasundara.
A task force of 13,092, including Senior SPs and Assistant SPs, had partaken in the special operation. Trained dogs had also been used for detection purposes.
The Spokesperson’s Office stated that 1,056 suspects had been arrested for further questioning, whilst 651 warrants had been acted upon in total.
17 suspects wanted in connection with various crimes had been arrested under said special operation.
Meanwhile, 359 had been arrested for possession of heroin and other illegal narcotics, whilst 258 more had been arrested for the possession of illicit liquor.
The operation, which had initially been organized with the aim of preventing crimes and traffic accidents, had successfully arrested 376 motorists for drunk-driving, whilst 291 had been arrested for driving without a valid license. Legal action had been taken against a further 139 for driving recklessly.
