
The Health Ministry has decided to hold discussions to allow ambulances to travel free-of-charge on all highways within Sri Lanka.
Minister of Health Dr.Rajitha Senaratne has stated that a suggestion will be made to the cabinet to formulate a suitable course of action to facilitate this provision. He made this statement following a press conference held at the Puttalam National Hospital.
The hospital staff members who were in attendance at the press conference stated that certain ambulances carrying patients requiring intensive care from the Puttalm hospital, utilize the expressway to transfer patients to the Colombo General hospital. It was also brought to light that the toll fee levied for ambulances travelling on expressways had to be borne by the medical officer who is in the vehicle.
The Health Minister responded by stating that he will discuss this issue with the cabinet extensively and formulate at a suitable resolution.
