A foreign national and local have drowned whilst bathing near the Weligama beach strip in Mirissa today (20).

The Police states that the two individuals who had swum into the ocean were swept under by a strong current in the area. It has been reported that a 26 year old foreigner drowned during the incident.

The Navy, Coast guard and Police attempted to rescue both individuals successfully recovering a 24 year old resident of the Galle region. Unfortunately however he was pronounced dead upon his admission to the Matara General Hospital.
