Minister of Sustainable Development and Wildlife Gamini Jayawickrama Perera is expected to be sworn in to the ministerial portfolios left vacant following the removal of Wijeyadasa Rajapakse from the post of Minister of Justice and Buddha Sasana, according to sources.
Perera will be sworn in to his new portfolios before President Maithripala Sirisena tomorrow (25), political sources told Ada Derana.
The UNP leadership had requested the President to remove Wijeyadasa Rajapakse from all his ministerial portfolios on the basis that he had breached the collective responsibility of the Cabinet of Ministers.
The President had given his consent to the request and as a result Rajapakse stepped down from both his ministerial portfolios yesterday (23).
Gamini Jayawickrama Perera, who will be taking on these additional portfolios, is one of the senior most members of the United National Party (UNP). Having represented the party in parliament with Ranil Wickremesinghe since the J.R. Jayawardena era in 1977, he is one of the most senior members currently in Parliament.
