Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka stated that he will present himself to any judicial body to submit evidence against former Chief of Defence Staff Jagath Jayasuriya to justify the war crimes allegations that were levied against him.
Speaking to the media at a press briefing yesterday (1), Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka further stated that he had received intelligence of several offences committed by former General Jagath Jayasuriya, during his tenure in the Vanni region.
The Regional Development Minister further went on to state that his successor, Gen. Jayasuriya was constantly protected by the Secretary of Defence at the time, Gotabhaya Rajapaksa.
It was further reported that the Field Marshal had requested former President Mahinda Rajapaksa not to appoint Gen.Jayasuriya as the Army Chief as he was aware of several malicious acts that he committed. He however stated that his appointment was made overlooking 17 senior officers.
He also stated that, over 200,000 soldiers who were convicted of war-crimes could have been spared had the High Ranking Military Officials be duly punished at the time.
Fonseka also stated that the delay of justice within Sri Lanka would compel international bodies to come forward to convict the perpetrators.
