Residents downstream of Kukuleganga warned to evacuate

The Disaster Management Centre (DMC) has instructed residents of Ingiriya, Bulathsinhala, Agalawatte and Madurawala to evacuate immediately.

One of the Kukuleganga spill gates was opened earleir today (07) owing to the heavy rainfall received, which in turn resulted in increased water currents downstream.

Meanwile, the National Building Research Organization (NBRO) has issued a warning on the possibility of landslides, slope failures, rock falls, cutting failures and ground subsidence in Ratnapura and Kegalle.

The warning has been issued as the rainfall within the past 24 hours has exceeded 150 mm, according to the DMC.

People living in vulnerable areas should be extra vigilant and ready to move quickly into safe places if heavy rains continue, the DMC announced.
