UPFA Parliamentarian Bandula Gunawardena says he does not think the recent sentence delivered on the ‘Sil Cloth’ case will serve as a precedent in the future as a verdict is reached on the bond issuance case.   

“I don’t think the same will happen. The treasury bond scam is the biggest robbery which occurred at the Central Bank in broad daylight. Attorneys have raised objections against bringing the main accused in the case to the stand.”

“So you can imagine how the law is being implemented,” Gunawardena said. 

The former minister made these comments while responding to questions from reporters after visiting Former Presidential Secretary Lalith Weeratunga and ex-TRC Director General Anusha Palpita, who were sentenced to 3 years in prison this week, at the Welikada Prison this morning (10). 

Speaking on the verdict, he said that a Presidential Secretary is duty bound to carry out the instruction of the President, by the powers vested with him under the constitution. 

He said that the President has been entrusted with the responsibility of safeguarding the Buddha Sasana and protecting it, under section 09 of the Constitution. 

Gunawardena further said that not even the learned judges have ruled that any of the two accused had made any personal financial gains through this Sil Cloth distribution process.
