MP Bandula Gunawardana stated that legal action may be sought against President Maithripala Sirisena should certain parties attempt to file a court case against former President Mahinda Rajapaksa over the misappropriation of public funds.
Speaking to the media at a gathering of the Joint Opposition, MP Gunawardana stated that President Maithripala Sirisena used Rs.65 million of the Securities and Exchange Commission’s funds for religious activities of Islamic devotees. He further stated that the President had allocated Rs.100, 000 to the Buddha Sasana Revival Fund and also provided Rs.5000 million for the relief efforts extended to flood victims.
Accordingly, MP Gunawardana stated that as President Maithripala Sirisena made these allocations of funds purely for welfare and not to gain favour for elections, former President Mahinda Rajapaksa too allocated funds for the distribution of ‘Sil Cloth’ in the same manner.
