In yet another incident of gold smuggling, Indian customs officials on Thursday caught two Sri Lankan passengers smuggling gold at the Visakhapatnam airport.

They arrived from Colombo by Sri Lankan Airlines flight UL-159. The accused, Shareefdeen Mohamed Mahroof, was carrying two pieces of gold in the abdomen, who after interrogation was shifted to King George Hospital to bring out the gold from the stomach under medical supervision.

Another passenger Hajara Umma Jeinul Abdeen, a Sri Lankan, was intercepted when she tried to exit through the Green Channel.

On an enquiry, the customs department officials seized 88 grams of gold jewellery valued at INR 2,41,807 (market value).

On a tip-off, the officials of Air Intelligence Unit intercepted the accused when they were trying to sneak through the green channel meant for the passengers carrying non-dutiable goods.
