Thyagavarasa Arulselvam, a former LTTE Sea Tiger leader who was in charge of the Mannar District during the war, has obtained the membership of the Illankai Tamil Arasu Kachchi (ITAK) yesterday (26), which was incidentally the birthday of slain LTTE leader Velupillai Prabhakaran.
He had obtained the party membership from TNA Mannar District MP Charles Nirmalananthan. Arulselvam stated that he is hoping to enter politics by contesting at the upcoming local government election under the ITAK.
He stated that he joined the party with the belief that the issues faced by Tamil people could only be resolved by ITAK party leader R. Sampanthan.
Arulselvam served as the Sea Tiger Leader of the Mannar District from 1985 to 2008 and was arrested by security forces in 2008, during the final stages of the war. He was released after undergoing rehabilitation in 2012, according to reports.
