Ada Derana correspondents report that a fire broke out at the top floor of a three-story shopping complex in Ambalantota earlier today (29).
A resident of the area had spotted smoke rising from within the building and promptly informed the proprietor of the event. Following the events that ensued residents of the area doused the flames preventing further harm from being caused.
Although the property sustained a significant amount of damage no injuries or fatalities were reported.
The reason for the fire is yet to be disclosed yet residents of the area claim that the flames broke out as a result of an electrical short caused by a faulty washing machine in the building.
Ambalantota police officials have launched an investigation into the incident.
