Speaker Karu Jayasuriya rejected the request made by UNP MP Ravi Karunanayake to deliver a special statement in Parliament based on standing orders.
However, issuing a statement to the media Ravi Karunanayake said that he has the right to prove his innocence as there is no one else in the political arena whose character has been subjected to such deformation with the release of the report by the commission of inquiry into bonds.
Karunanayake alleged that he is of the view that those who studied the report and prepared the special statement for the president have changed the facts being mentioned in the statement made by the president should be investigated.
“I have become a target of a planned and brutal political endeavor as I stood for good governance” Ravi added.
Ravi said President’s National address on January 03, 2018 after receiving the report of the bond commission is the foundation of his special statement today.
“Although the president stated that the report proposes a case should be filed against me under the bribery and corruption act it only mentions to take action against him if and only such an offense was committed.”
“I’m not at fault, as mentioned in the 838th page of the report, because it is stated that the commission accepts it was just and reasonable for the finance Minister to wish to bring yield rates down since the former government has maintained it as a principle”
He also questions as to where in the report it is mentioned a case should be filed against him based on bribery and corruption allegations.
Although the statement written for the President to be read out on January 3 said a case should be filed against him for giving false evidence before the commission, the report of the commission doesn’t mention that he gave false evidence and it only mentions that it recommends the AG and the others who are responsible to consider whether the evidence given is accurate and if so to decide whether legal actions taken against him.
Karunanayake said that he is of the view those who studied the report and prepared the special statement for the president have changed the facts being mentioned in the statement, therefore the statement made by president should be investigated.
