Govt to buy up to 5,000kg of paddy from each farmer

Sri Lanka’s Cabinet of Ministers has granted approval for the proposal to increase the quantity of paddy purchased by the Paddy Marketing Board (PMB) from each farmer to 5,000kg, Minister Mahinda Amaraweera said.

The government currently purchases up to 3,000kg from each paddy farmer.

The proposal presented by Minister of Agriculture Mahinda Amaraweera to increase this quantity to 5,000kg received approval during the Cabinet meeting today (18).

The Paddy Marketing Board is purchasing Nadu at a certified price of Rs 38 per kilo and Samba at Rs 41 per kilo.

Issuing a statement, the Ministry of Agriculture said it has been reported that traders in the private sector are purchasing paddy at prices around Rs 10 more than the Paddy Marketing Board.

Minister Amaraweera says that it brings him great pleasure that paddy farmers will be able to make higher profits this harvest season.
