The Permanent High Court at Bar has decided to hold daily hearings from October 29 on the case filed against the former President’s Chief of Staff Gamini Senarath and three others over the misappropriation of funds belonging to Litro Gas.

The case was taken up today (19) before a three-member bench comprised of Judges Sampath Abeykoon (President), Sampath Wijeratne and Champa Janaki Rajaratne.

The defence counsel informed the court that certain document are tied to the testimonies provided by witnesses to the police and that he therefore requires access to these documents in order to face the case.

In response to this, the Deputy Solicitor General Thusith Mudalige informed the court that steps will be taken to handover the said documents before next Friday.

The President of the Permanent High Court at Bar commended the attorneys from both sides for their cooperation on exchanging documents.

The court announced that it has decided to conduct day-to-day proceedings from October 29 and ordered four witnesses to appear before the court on that date.

However, the judge said that the case will be taken up on September 28 in order to check whether the documents requested by the defence counsel has been provided properly.

Senarath, a former Chairman of Sri Lanka Insurance Corporation, its former Managing Director Piyadasa Kudabalage, Neil Bandara Hapuhinna and Lasantha Bandara were the first to be indicted before the newly set up Permanent High Court at Bar.

They face charges of misappropriation of Rs 500 million in funds belonging to Litro Gas Lanka by investing in ventures including the Grand Hyatt hotel project.

Mr. Senarath was the chief of staff of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa.
