Renovating dilapidated tanks in Anuradhapura district to commence today

A programme for the renovating dilapidated tanks in the Anuradhapura district under the Cascaded Tank-Village System will commence today (21) near the Mahawilachchiya, Nabadagasdigiliya tank under the patronage of President Maithripala Sirisena.
17 tanks in Mahawilachchiya and Nochchiyagama Divisional Secretariat Divisions have been selected to renovate under the first phase. In parallel to this event many projects will be implemented to uplift the living standard of the people living in those areas.
This process under the national programme to renovate 2400 tanks will implement many provinces in Sri Lanka and all the renovation works will be carried out with the assistance of the Engineering Regiment of the Sri Lanka Army.
Through reconstructing the Ellanga System which is an excellent irrigational concept since the ancient kingdoms this program of reconstruction is conducted to store more water within the rural tanks. It is expected to provide a permanent solution to the severe lack of drinking water and irrigational water supplements in the Rajarata area.
Maintaining the environmental balance, increase of level of water in soil, developing the production of agricultural crops, development of the fisheries industry, developing the livelihood of through the field of tourism in rural sector, are some of the expected outcomes of this.
Solving the issue of water scarcity, increase availability of food and water for the people and animals, eradicating poverty and increasing the livelihood of the people in the area, decreasing the conflicts between the people and the animals, increasing the Gross Domestic Product and targeting all the reconstruction of irrigational facilities in the country are some its benefits.
