Man arrested for smuggling gold rings worth over Rs 1.7 mn

Customs officers have apprehended a Sri Lankan passenger at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) for smuggling in 10 gold rings from Singapore.

 

The arrested individual is reportedly a 44-year-old businessman residing in Kotikawatta area.

 

Customs officers had discovered the gold rings hidden inside the pocket of the passenger while attempting to depart the Katunayake airport following his arrival in the country this morning (27) at 2.00 a.m.

 

Accordingly, 10 gold rings, weighing up to 299.80 g and valued over Rs 1.7 million, were seized from the passenger.

 

Customs officers attached to the BIA are conducting further investigations regarding the incident.
