Police missions launched to wipe out ‘Aava’ gang

Police have commenced special operations to wipe out the ‘Aava’ crime gang in Jaffna.
Chunnakam police officials managed to apprehend 2 members of the ‘Aava’ gang on 27th September with swords and 6 hatchets on them. They have been remanded until 8th October by the order of Mallakam Court.
Sri Lanka Police has launched missions to arrest the ‘Aava’ gang for the past several months and they have managed to seize nearly 35 members of the gang within the Jaffna Division.
On September 30th, when the police intervened on a report of a group behaving in an unruly manner in Kopay and had arrested three suspects, who were later revealed to be members of the ‘Aava’ group. A 23 year old named Gnasekaran Gnanusan from Kaithady, a 23 year named Yellowmast from Jaffna and a 22 year old named Sabarathnam Pahidaran were arrested in this manner.
A Rambo knife, a sword and their motorcycle had also been seized by the police. Several others have been identified with regard to the incident and investigations are being conducted for their arrest. The arrested have been remanded until they are presented at the Jaffna Magistrate’s Court on October 15.
Meanwhile, intelligence gathered during these missions led to the discovery of 2 hatchets and a hand-axe, allegedly used by the ‘Aava’ gang, at a house in Kopay.
These operations are conducted under the supervision of IGP Pujith Jayasundara and direction of Senior DIG of Northern Province.
