Justice Nalin Perera sworn in as new Chief Justice

Senior Supreme Court Justice Nalin Perera took oaths as the new Chief Justice before President Maithripala Sirisena at the President’s Official Residence, today (12).

 

He was nominated by President Maithripala Sirisena to the Constitutional Council for the post of Chief Justice following the retirement of Justice Priyasath Depp.

 

Justice Nalin Perera joined the judicial service as a magistrate and was gradually promoted to a Supreme Court judge by the President. 

 

President Sirisena has nomination Supreme Court Judge Nalin Perera to the post of Chief Justice, which fell vacant today due to the retirement of Chief Justice Priyasad Dep.

 

The council convened today and approved the nominee while the decision was informed to the President.

 

A former High court and Court of Appeal judge, Nalin Perera was appointed by President Maithripala Sirisena in 2016 to replace Justice Sarath de Abrew in the Supreme Court.

 

He becomes the 46th Chief Justice of Sri Lanka and the first career Judge to be appointed as Chief Justice after three decades.
