
Students of Kotagala Teacher Training College had launched a protest this morning (26) at around 7.30 a.m. in support of the estate workers, who recently carried out a protest demanding an increment in their basic wage up to Rs 1000.
The protest was staged in front of the entrance road of the training college, on the Hatton-Nuwara Eliya main road.
Protesting trainee teachers stated that, in proportion to the current cost of living, the labourers who earn the lowest basic wages in the country are living in the estates.
They emphasized that the government should step in to increase the daily basic wage of estate workers up to Rs 1000.
Reportedly, children of several estate workers are also currently studying in the Kotagala Teacher Training College.
